1. Mongoose Juneau Fat Tire Bike

“Fat tire bike for off-roading experiences”

Pros
  • Performs very well on snow trails
  • Hydro tubing on the frame adds performance efficiency
  • Good brakes and gear control
Cons
  • Pedals are plastic and low-quality
  • The seat is too heavy and will need replacement

The Mongoose Juneau bike is designed for rides in all weather conditions and can be a great addition to your collection if you’re a bike enthusiast. This bike is well suited to perform on all kinds of tracks whether its sand or snow and offers the same riding experience through the most difficult of trails.

Aesthetically, the bike has a very fresh design with metallic blue color for the frame and slate grey handlebar and seat. The frame is made of aluminum and is a classic step-over frame, along with hydroformed tubing. This type of tubing enhances the performance of the bike and offers a better experience when compared with bikes that come with butted tubing design.

I purchased this bike a few months back and have been in love with it ever since. I’ve taken it out for multiple rides and covered decent miles on different trails and have been extremely satisfied with its performance especially in the snow trails.

The height range for this bike is between 5’4 to 6’2 which makes it a great family bike. My sister and I are both bike enthusiasts and have not had any complaints with this one so far with regards to height adjustments. The seat post was a bit too heavy but we replaced it early on to get a more comfortable fit.

What I find fulfilling about this bike is the Shimano drivetrain. The 16-speed cycles provide a wide selection of gears to choose from, which makes going through different terrains easy. The gear changes are very smooth and precise from day one. The tires are appropriately sized, and provide a stable and bump-free ride.

And the braking system is just incomparable. Both front and rear disc brakes work like a charm and give this bike great stopping power, making it a good companion for uphill adventures.

Bottom Line

All in all, this is one of the best mountain bikes under 500 dollars, you can find. It is fat-tired and has great brakes and gear control, allows height adjustments, is family-friendly and the design is also great. The only thing that I did not like about this bike is the quality of pedals.

They’re made of plastic and frankly not well suited for extensive riding. But considering the price, if you can fit a replacement for paddles in your budget, you will find this a good choice. The assembly of this bike is also not very complicated and you can easily do it by yourself if you have a little knowledge of bikes.

Specs Recap

  • Editor’s Score: 9/10
  • Bike Name: Mongoose Juneau 26-Inch Fat Tire Bike
  • Suspension: Rigid
  • Wheels: 26 inch
  • Frame: Aluminum
  • Brakes: Front and rear disc brakes

2. Schwinn Mesa Adult Mountain Bike

“Adult bike for serious off-roaders”

Pros
  • Shimano drivetrain and EZ fire shifters
  • Great design and color options
  • Suitable for all trail types
Cons
  • Limited height range for an adult bike
  • The seat is small and uncomfortable

The Schwinn Mesa 2 is one of the few bikes in the market that offer performance, quality, and stable riding experience on a budget. This bike offers two choices of colors, my personal preference is the black one. However, the red one can also be a good choice if you like vibrance.

The design of the bike is simple and practical. It has a small frame, that fits riders between the range of 5’2 to 5’6. This makes it ideal for girls, but in general, the bike is gender-neutral. I am 5’6 and this bike works great for me, after making a few adjustments to the saddle post.

Although, this bike is advertised as an adult bike and can take on some seriously aggressive trails, keep in mind the height range is very limited with a maximum going to 5’6’’, which is too short for most adults.

The tires and wheels are 27.5 inches Schwinn MTB and provide excellent traction and stability to the riding experience while giving it the oomph factor of a fat tire bike. The bike has a Schwinn seat and an adjustable handlebar design, which completes the overall look.

The frame is also from Schwinn and is mountain tuned aluminum, and is not too heavy. I’ve had to carry it multiple times and have always been able to easily lift it without breaking my back.

What I love most about this bike is the suspension. The front suspension is super shock absorbent and makes this bike my personal favorite for dirt roads.

The Shimano EZ fire shifters and the Shimano tourney 21-speed drivetrain gives it the range of speed needed to tackle any type of trail. You can choose the option between 21 or 24-speed drivetrain but I’ve gotten the one with 21-speed cycles and it works fine for me on all trails.

In addition to all of that, the mechanical disc brakes are precise and on point, offering great stopping power, even on gravel paths. The seat post is also Schwinn and is relatively small. I am a bit on the bulky side so for me the seat post was just not working and I replaced it after a few rides.

Bottom Line

To sum it up, this is one of the best mountain bikes under 500 dollars and very ideal for women. It’s lightweight and offers a choice between two colors, has a good set of features, and an affordable price. The only thing keeping it from being widely popular is the height limitation and partially the seat post, which is not too comfortable for long rides.

Specs Recap

  • Editor’s Score: 9/10

3. Mongoose Dolomite Fat Tire Men’s Mountain Bike

“Budget friendly Beginner’s Fat Tire Bike”

Pros
  • Suitable for all weather conditions
  • Wheel size offers good traction
  • Limited lifetime warranty
Cons
  • Not suitable for aggressive off-roading
  • Majority parts are plastic
  • Limited height range

The Dolomite bike with its supersized fat tires and its high tensile steel frame is any off-roaders dream bike. It is a beginner bike, mostly suitable for short off-road trails. It offers a comfortable riding experience and is a good option for those who’re looking to get the feel of a fat tire bike.

The bike has a chunky design due to its knobby tires but is not as heavy as it appears in the first look. In fact, the bike is relatively light thanks to its alloy rims which keep from adding additional weight.

It comes with a threadless headset, which is adjustable for riders with different heights. My boyfriend got this a year back and I borrowed it for a ride but wasn’t able to get far. According to the size chart, this bike is designed to fit riders between the heights of 5’6’’ to 6’’, however, it is a little too big for my height at 5’6’’.

Although this is a men’s bike, I am totally in love with the way it looks. The fresh blue color is very appealing and the fat tires are the icing on the cake. One thing my boyfriend is always going on about is the beach cruiser pedals on this bike.

He says the pedals make long rides feel super easy and comfortable. However, he has had a number of complaints with the poorer plastic parts. Another problem with this bike was the chain, which broke off in the middle of the 5th ride and had to be replaced altogether.

The bike comes with 7-speed shift twisters and a Shimano rear derailleur which make gear changing swift and precise. These two combined with the front and rear disc brakes make it fit for the trickiest of trails. The brakes ensure rider safety in all weather conditions making it a good choice for adventurous riders.

The 4-inch wide tires give it excellent traction and the 3 piece crankset makes maintenance easy. The design is nice and the price is ideal given that it offers a good set of features fit to make it all-trail suitable.

The bike ships partially assembled and can be ready to go within a few hours, without any need for professional assistance. It also offers a limited warranty which makes this a good deal.

Bottom Line

Overall, this bike is a good choice for riders planning to take it on forest trails, gravel paths, or sandy rides by the beach. What this is not fit for is aggressive trails, and will break apart there. But overall, this is one of the best mountain bikes under 500 dollars available in the market.

Specs Recap

  • Editor’s Score: 9/10
  • Bike Name: Mongoose Dolomite Fat Tire Men’s Mountain Bike
  • Suspension: 100mm, 34mm Stanchion
  • Wheels: 26 inch

4. EUROBIKE Full Suspension Mountain Bike

“Full Suspension Adult Bike”

Pros
  • Ergonomic design and good performance
  • Shimano front and rear derailleurs
  • Comfortable and versatile
Cons
  • Pedals need replacing
  • Height ranges from 5’7’’

If you’re thinking about a mountain bike that fits your budget and performs well in all types of trails, this is your bike. The bike has a classic stepover steel frame, with a total weight of 40lbs. For me, this is a bit too heavy to consider for uphill tracks, but I like borrowing it from my brother for dirt trails.

The bike is built to carry weight and the strong frame can easily take up to 300lbs. It works great for me considering the fact that I’m very bulky. However, the bike is best suitable for adults and starts from a height range of 5’7’’. Regardless of this, I enjoy riding this bike every now and then.

I particularly love the style of this bike with its orange outlining popping out on the black frame. However, it was the racer handlebar design along with the comfortable seat and its awesome suspension that made me a fan of this bike. On bumpy trails, the riding experience of this bike is as good as it gets.

What makes this bike a good choice is the quality of the features it offers at an unbelievable price. It has Shimano front and rear derailleurs, dual disc brakes, and 21-speed cycles to make the performance smooth and versatile.

The braking system has very good stopping power, and the bike is stable enough to withstand difficult weather conditions. The front and rear disc brakes work without skipping from day one and are very precise.

The pedals may need replacing early on, depending on how extensively you plan to use it. It is best suited for joyriders and not recommended for hardcore jumping and adventure.

Although, given the price that it comes at, even with minor upgrades over time, this bike offers a very good performance to cost ratio. The height range though is very limited so you need to make sure it fits you right, before making a purchase decision.

In addition to having an ergonomic design, the fat tires on this full-suspension bike are which allow it to reach its full potential. This big set of tires makes it most suitable for hard trails. However, the pedals are a major design flaw and need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Bottom Line

The bike comes 85% pre-assembled and the rest is easy to bring together.  The box includes the complete set of tools needed for the assembly and also has a detailed instruction manual to help you get started. All in all, I’d recommend this bike for the quality and comfort it offers, for an extremely reasonable price, making it to the fourth position in our list of the best mountain bikes under 500 dollars.

Specs Recap

5. Mongoose Malus Fat Tire Bike

“Let Loose with The Mongoose Malus”

Pros
  • Sturdy and all trail-friendly
  • Very good value for money
  • Comfortable and versatile
Cons
  • Experienced the gears skip a few times
  • There is no front derailleur

They say there is nothing you cant do on Mongoose and they’re exactly right. The Mongoose Malus is one of the top-notch mountain bikes in the market and comes at an exceptionally reasonable price. It is a fat tire bike, with a steel frame and a state of the art design.

Although this is advertised as a men’s bike, it is very gender-neutral in its looks. It comes in two color variations, the silver and grey combination and the silver and maroon combination, which make it stand apart from the most commonly found black frame bikes in the market.

This is one of the three Mongoose bikes I own, and I am very content with the way the bike is built. The threadless headset design allows you to make adjustments for a varied range of heights easily. The handlebar and stem are both alloy and give you great control over the bike motion.

The three-piece crankset makes this bike easy to maintain, while the sturdy steel frame makes it suitable for all types of trails. Another performance-enhancing feature of the bike is the 4-inch wide alloy rims, which help keep it lightweight and don’t hinder its smooth rolling.

It uses front and rear disc brakes. The brakes work flawlessly and have incredible stopping power. This is a bike truly built for difficult terrains. I have ridden it in snow and by the beach, without any complaints.

The bike has a 7-speed Shimano drivetrain and a Shimano rear derailleur which offers the necessary speed range to tackle difficult trails and smooth gear control. And the chunky tires here, pull together all the features by adding extra support against bumps, rocks, or anything that stands in the way of this bike.

Like any other bike in this price range, this bike will also require several replacements overtime. I had already replaced the seat after the first month of purchase, but that’s mostly because I’m too big, so it didn’t fit nicely. However, for less bulky riders, I’d recommend adding padding to the seat to make it more comfortable for long rides instead of replacing it altogether.

Bottom Line

But keeping aside the upgrades done for pleasure, this is a good starter bike and the right fit for you if you’re looking to explore the hype about mountain bikes. The assembly is fairly simple and took me about an hour to set it up. It is better than a Dolomite bike given the specifications and is a good choice for a starter bike, making it to our list of the best mountain bikes under $500.

6. Schwinn Bonafide Mens Mountain Bike

“A men’s bike worthy of its name”

Pros
  • Ships partially assembled
  • All Shimano Parts
  • 5 year limited warranty
Cons
  • The chain comes off easily
  • Not suitable for aggressive riding

Hit the trickiest tracks with this beauty and look cool doing it. This bike glides on all kinds of tracks without breaking a sweat, thanks to its thick 29 inch tires and a sturdy aluminum frame.

The bike comes with a 17-inch stepover frame and is one of the Schwinn classics. It comes in an alternate color combination setting with a matte black base and blood-red outlines and name printed on it.

The bike is suitable for riders up to a height of 6’2” and can carry heavy weights. However, this ability comes at a disadvantage of the bike itself weighing 39lbs. Although the weight ratio does add extra stability, so it is not a total deal-breaker if you can handle it.

Despite the weight, the high profile double-wall alloy rims allow it to stay in the category of lightweight bikes. It is a strong bike and is durable for use in all kinds of weather conditions.

The Bonafide bike comes with a 24 speed Shimano drivetrain and EZ fire shifters which allow easy control and a variety of combinations for maintaining the right speed.

The bike is great for using in off-roading trails with its excellent stopping power. This is achieved by using mechanical disc brakes both in the front and rear. Furthermore, both the derailleurs used in this bike are also Shimano parts and make gear changes swift and crisp.

The bike uses Schwinn alloy cranks to make maintenance a breeze, and Schwinn fork suspension to absorb the impact of bumps and provide a stable ride. But keep in mind, that even with all the Shimano parts and added suspension, this bike is only usable for mildly difficult trails and not suitable for aggressive rides.

The seat post used in this bike is very small, especially given the fact that it’s designed for men falling in the taller height range. I’d recommend changing it to something more comfortable that makes the bike suitable for long rides.

Bottom Line

The bike is shipped partially assembled, and to make the offer more enticing it comes with a limited 5-year warranty. The assembly requires only attaching the basic things like the seat, handlebars, front wheel, and pedals.

All in all, if you’ve assembled a bike before, it shouldn’t take you longer than 20 minutes to get this bike ready to ride.

7. Eurobike EURX9 Mountain Bike

“Diverse features for versatile riders”

Pros
  • All Shimano Parts
  • Easy assembly and ships 85% assembled
Cons
  • Only available in adult sizes starting from 5’8’’
  • Chain degrades quickly

The Eurobike EURX9 is as versatile as the continent it’s named after. It is lightweight, with the ability to carry heavy riders. The weight of the bike itself stands at only a mere 34lbs but it is able to carry a weight of up to 330lbs. This is definitely good news for the bulky riders looking for a mountain bike without having to spend thousands of dollars.

The aluminum frame is sturdy and starts with a good height of 19 inches. This is an adult bike and is designed to fit riders from 5’8’’ and to a maximum height range of 6’2’’. For me personally, this is one of the shortcomings of this bike.

The bike has a straight handlebar design which allows you to ride it leaning forward in a racer position. The pedals on this bike are MTB and the seat post is 27.2 x 300 mm and all of this is assembled on a mountain bike stem. The seat is wide enough for bulkier riders and very comfortable for smaller ones.

With respect to the design, this is one of the best-looking mountain bikes I’ve come across. It has a unique wheel design, with its big tires and stylish 3 spoke rims. The color is fresh green and gives it a very pleasing touch.

Although Eurobike is a relatively less popular brand when it comes to mountain bikes, the bike using all Shimano parts adds to its credibility. The Shimano EF-500 shifter makes gear changes swift and easy to control.

The front and rear derailleurs are both Shimano RD-T4 500, which add additional gear control. The 21-speed cycles allow you to start slow and manage speed according to different terrains without extra effort.

The performance experience is completed with dual disc brakes which offer the necessary stopping power. One thing that sets this bike apart is the added control it has due to the rims made of magnesium alloy.

Assembly of this bike is not complicated and it comes 85% assembled with a good instruction manual. The tools required for the assembly are also included in the box.

One thing to keep in mind while making your purchase decision is the height limitation for this bike.

Bottom Line

All in all, this is definitely a tall person bike and like any other bike, there’s always room for improvement. It will need minor upgrades over the course of time beginning with the chain, but nothing too significant for the given price.

This is certainly one of the best mountain bikes under $500 that I’ve come across, and will never give away its price in the first look.

Specs Recap

8. Gravity 2020 FSX 1.0 Full Suspension Mountain Bike

“Get full suspension and full control with Gravity 2020”

Pros
  • All Shimano Parts
  • Easy assembly and ships 85% assembled
Cons
  • Only available in adult sizes starting from 5’8’’
  • Unfit for Off-roading and hard trails

Though this bike is by Gravity, even gravity can’t hold it down. It is one of the latest mountain bikes that offer full dual suspension and make any rider feel like they’re flying.

No bumps, no gear skipping, no braking failures, there is nothing that this bike doesn’t do right. The performance is so flawless it’ll give the other bikes a run for their money.

And when you’ve got it all, why not flaunt it all right? The bike’s design is super trendy, with a bright yellow paint job and a riser handlebar. The frame is a classic stepover aluminum that comes in a variety of sizes.

The frame sizes are designed to fit riders starting from the height of 5’6’’ for the x-small 15-inch frame with a standover height of 26.1 inches, and goes up to fit riders 6’1’’ and above for the x-large 21-inch frame, with a standover height of 30.5 inches.

The bike offers a smooth riding experience and achieves this by using Shimano front and rear derailleurs, which make gear changes a child’s play. The 24-speed cycles make it suitable for navigating through tricky areas with its varied range of speeds to choose from and good control power.

Shimano shifters allow swift gear changes, ensuring quality and rider safety at all times. The safety is further enhanced with the powerful braking system. No mountain bike is perfect without a quick stopping power and the front and rear Tektro Novella disc brakes give it just that.

It also has a Suntour triple crankset which makes this bike low maintenance. Additionally, the 26-inch tires offer a smooth-rolling ability, though they significantly take away off-roading performance. Even with the double-wall rims and quick-release wheels, the tire size is a building flaw that cannot be overlooked.

It uses adjustable front and rear MTB full suspension, which allows it the ability to perform well on bumpy trails. The bike is good to ride on gravel trails and absorbs the shocks from most obstacles. However, it is only suitable for medium intensity rides and not fit for off-roading or going on long adventures.

Bottom Line

Keep in mind that this bike is designed as a beginner bike, so if you’re starting out and want to get a feel of the mountain biking experience, this is a good fit for you. But if you’re experienced and planning for something to hit the hard trails with, this may not be the best choice.

The assembly of this bike takes a few hours but can be managed at home. Also, the is a considerably heavy bike as compared to the others on the market with the same feature set. However, given the price, it makes for a good starting option for adult riders.

9. Schwinn Traxion Mountain Bike

“Good looking partner for adventures”

Pros
  • Uses all Shimano Parts
  • Full Dual Suspension
  • Chunky tires
Cons
  • Professional assembly required
  • Average Quality

Schwinn Traxion is a good looking partner for all your outdoor excursions. It is a full dual suspension bike and comes at a really great price. Schwinn is well known for its quality and its Traxion mountain bike is no exception.

The bike has a dual suspension aluminum frame, with a contrast of bright yellow outlining with a deep black base. It is a sure sight where ever you take it and will never have the onlookers guess its price.

The bike itself is not very heavy for a mountain bike. The double-wall alloy rims, though are extra wide but help in keeping the frame weight low. The flat handlebars with a raised seat post give it an ergonomic design and make the bike as aesthetically pleasing as its comfortable.

Specifications wise, this bike is built with 24-speed EZ fire Shimano trigger shifters. These give it a range of different speeds and allow you to move at your own pace comfortably.

Coupled with the above, the Shimano front and rear derailleurs make the gear shifting process flawless. The knobby tires of this bike offer excellent traction and make it suitable for all kinds of trails, whether its dirt, gravel, sand, or snow.

The Schwinn suspension fork adds to the performance by absorbing the shocks from all bumps and thumps on the way, making this bike unstoppable in all weather conditions. This is a bike made for long adventures while keeping the comfort and safety of the riders in mind.

The bike uses mechanical disc brakes in front and rear which offer the riders complete control over sudden stops. But the brakes do wear rather quickly and may need replacements soon. Another thing to keep in mind is the quality of several plastic parts which are satisfactory at best.

If you plan to purchase this bike, prepare your mind about making some initial investments, however, this shouldn’t be too big of a concern considering the bike comes at a very affordable price.

All bikes need upgrades eventually and the upgrades or replacements needed for this one will highly depend on the intensity of your use. Apart from the quality, the assembly of this bike is another thing that kept it from being ranked higher.

It is very difficult to assemble on your own based on the instructions that are included with it, especially if you’re a beginner. I would highly recommend not wasting time or effort and seeing a professional for assembly.

Bottom Line

All in all, this is a good bike at a good price. It is all-terrain suitable and can give you a comfortable riding experience while keeping the thrill of adventure.

10. Diamondback Bicycles Overdrive Hardtail Mountain Bike

“A hardcore bike for hard trails”

Pros
  • Comes ready to ride with 85% assembly
  • Uses a full Shimano drivetrain
  • Offers a handmade frame and custom built features
Cons
  • Brakes could have been improved

Its, bold, it’s strong and it comes in a blood-red color. The Overdrive mountain bike is sure to drive you crazy with its amazing experience. The bike’s design speaks volumes about its quality. It is a true do-it-all bike and is perfect for all types of trails and adventures.

Let’s start by talking about its classic build. The frame is 6061-T6 hand-built aluminum alloy. When I say it is made for mountain biking, I’m not exaggerating. The tubing is also custom formed and butted which makes this bike lighter than a traditional mountain bike. The butted tubing also enables it to have better control and swift motion.

However, for the riders that prefer a tubeless design, this bike has a solution. The Blanchard 25 wheelset used in this bike is tubeless compatible and doesn’t have a negative effect on the performance at all.

The bike itself weighs only 32.2 pounds which is practically paper for a mountain bike. This makes it super easy to carry and suitable not only for hard trails but ideal for uphill adventures as well.

If the design alone is not enough for you to make up your mind, you’ll be glad to know that this bike does not disappoint in the specifications either. The thick 27.5 inch wheels make it roll smooth over any obstacle that is in the way, and the air-sprung suspension makes this rolling bump less by soaking up all shocks.

The bike offers a combination of 24 speeds to choose from, with 3 gears in the front and 4 gears in the back. This range allows you to move easily through tricky areas without experiencing any change in performance.

The Suntour XCT cranks allow you to glide up the hills and come down swiftly with the same ease and without the extra effort. Additionally, the mechanical disc brakes give it stopping power that can stand at par with the difficult trials, and allow you to really push your limits.

Bottom Line

While it offers great suspension, a full Shimano drivetrain, a custom-built frame, and every other feature you may need to make a good hard trail bike, the Overdrive, does not drive you over your budget. It is hands down one of the best mountain bikes under $500 and will give the other high priced bikes a serious competition.

This bike ships ready to ride and helps you save hours of assembly. All you need to do is assemble the front wheel, pedals, and seat and you’re good to go. All in all, it offers great value for money and I would highly recommend this to all beginners as well as experts.
